Square footage is only the beginning
One ceiling may have untreated texture over reasonably finished drywall. Another may have painted texture, damaged joints and widespread previous repairs. Area affects labour and material quantities, but it does not reveal those conditions.

The finish included in the scope
An estimate should make clear whether it includes texture removal only, localized repair, broader skim coating, sanding, primer, and ceiling paint. Comparing two figures is difficult if the finish point is different.

For a useful estimate, have the approximate room dimensions and ceiling height ready when you call. If you know the texture has been painted, mention that too. Those details tell us much more about the likely scope than square footage by itself.
